Ex-Toronto vocalist Dawn Aitken, a West Coaster now, brings vitality to jazz standards and a twist to seldom-recorded tunes like Joni Mitchell’s title track. For the ballad The Nearness of You, she has a husky sensuality, turning over a line with some thought to the lyric. She gets down and dirty on the old Coasters hit Love Potion Number Nine, which features biting guitar from Harris Van Berkel, and sings the blues on Cold, Cold Feelin. The superb band includes Bill Sample and Ron Johnston on piano, Van Berkel on guitar, Tom Keenlyside on saxophones, Russ Botin and Kerry Galloway on bass and Jerry Adolphe on drums.
