Dawn Aitken is a consummate performer. An accomplished, and sought-after vocalist and actress, she brings a wealth of performance and creative experience to each engagement she plays while captivating the audience with her lush, "low and throatily rich" (The Globe and Mail) voice.
Compared at times with artists such as Phoebe Snow and Peggy Lee, Ms. Aitken's lyrical interpretation and versatility have lent themselves well to her rich and varied career.
Originally a student of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, in the late-70's, Ms. Aitken became well known on the cabaret and night club circuit where she played numerous and acclaimed solo performance engagements. "She has the wonderful ability to take a not e and roll it over her tongue, making it sound big and fat and rich and then contrast that with light, subtle, almost airy tones." (The Globe and Mail). This soon led to heralded performances in the hit Broadway show, "Pump boys and Dinettes". Toward the late 1980's Ms. Aitken could be found headlining, at the "Ritz Carlton Hotel" in downtown Chicago, and performing to packed houses and standing ovations at local hot spots, such as the famous "Bulls Jazz Club". Approached by producers to appear in an original musical based on her life (and the lives of three, like-minded career singers ) Ms. Aitken returned to Canada and to rave reviews in the critically acclaimed musical "Bar Girls".
Ms. Aitken's voice is recognizable to many across Canada and the United States as she has extensive experience as a voice-over talent and jingle singer. Considered "Canada's premiere female singer" (The Toronto Star) on the radio and television-jingle circuit, her's is the voice which has been heard on commercials for such corporate giants as Coca-Cola, Budweiser, McDonald's and United Airlines, among a host of many others. Her hard work, ability to be "precise of voice and ear" (The Toronto Star) plus her unique and popular vocal style have made her one of North America's most sought-after recording voices and landed her the 1989 Ad Music Award for Best Female Vocal Performance.
While Ms. Aitken is known across North America for her commercial efforts she has also toured, performed and recorded with such popular artists as Shirley Eikhard, Marc Jordan, Laura Smith, Rick"The Hawk"Walsh, and the rock group Haywire to name a few. Television work has also come her way in the form of television hosting, along side Burton Cummings for three years on the Variety Club Telethon, or in the form of principle roles on the CBC production of "Black Harbour".
